Background:
Asa grew up in a family of lower-middle class social standing. He was the third youngest brother in the Durden family, and therefore most of his clothing was hand-me-downs from is older brothers. Jack Durden, Asa's father, works park maintenance for the Games Department at the ministry, while his mother is a clerk at a bookstore in Hogsmeade. Although the family did not have much money, Asa still had a healthy childhood. He and his brother often amused themselves by sneaking off to an empty field behind their modest three bedroom house to play quidditch.
When Asa was eleven, he began Hogwarts like so many other young witches and wizards. Much to the surprise of the Durden family (who were either sorted into Gryffindor or Hufflepuff), young Asa wound up in Slytherin. He made the best of it, becoming immediately tempted by the power and social status most of his housemates possessed. However, it also introduced Asa to the world of materialism. He began to resent his parents for their middle class occupations. The summer before his sixth year, Asa began to shoplift. At first it was silly little things - maybe the silverware at a restaurant, or a piece of candy from Honeydukes when he didn't feel like paying for it. But as time passed, he became more manipulative and conniving. Jewelry, books, new robes, shoes, even a spiffy leather jacket - nothing seemed out of his reach.
As he grew older, his interests also matured. He began to pass his vacations from school at the various art galleries located throughout London. He took quite a liking to Renaissance art, and began to dream of one day staging an art heist. Asa is still obsessed with the idea. after he graduated from Hogwarts, Asa took up a post at a small, local gallery. By the days, he is an innocent architecture student with a quirky enthusiasm for art. By night, though, he continues his thievery, often pickpocketing the wealthy looking muggle business men who frequent downtown London past dark. After two months at the gallery, Asa finally made enough money to put a down payment on a loft. He happily moved out of his parents' house, glad to finally be independent and free to live the life of materialism he so craved.
One night while walking home, Asa was unfortunate enough to end up on the wrong side of the tracks in Tottenham. Quickly surrounded by a crew of hoodlums, Asa tried to stand his ground even as nerves shook his thing shoulders. Luckily, someone came to his rescue. Ever since, Asa Durden and his new found partner-in-crime Emerson Palmer have been virtually inseparable. They're an unlikely duo, though it is suffice to say Asa benefits from Emerson's logic and knack for charity. It keeps him in line.
Most recently, a fellow by the name of Thayne Aynsworth has caught Asa's attention. He had seen the name appear in various wizarding tabloids - mostly talk about the wizard's engagement to Ivie Holstein. Asa grew quick to admire the man's style, and throughout his own treks into the wrong side of the tracks - also known as Knockturn Alley - he heard whispers that Thayne was quickly elevating to the status of the new dark lord. Intrigued even further, Asa sought him out. It took some time to gain Thayne's confidence, but it wasn't long from there that Asa was given the honorary title of assistant. It's something he holds dear, strange as it seems.
