Background: Holden had a fairly average childhood. He grew up in a suburb of Bristol. His parents always had a loving relationship, and never argued in front of Holden or his younger sister. However, as he grew to be a teenager, something felt strange to Holden when he'd return home for winter or summer breaks. Being stuck in suburbia just did not suit him. He began to sneak out of his room in the middle of the night. More than once, he flew to London on his broom. Once there, Holden became acquainted with underground indie culture, and his artistic talent flourished.
Being sorted into Ravenclaw didn't come as a surprise to his parents. Perhaps they would have been concerned if he was in Slytherin. Holden fits the mold of a Ravenclaw well enough. He can often be found in the library until early hours of the morning, pouring over homework until it's nothing short of perfect before turning it in. However, he finds this focus difficult to maintain during class, when his fingers itch to grasp a drawing pencil. He often gives into the urge.
He was diagnosed with the manic-depressive disease bipolar disorder by a Healer at St. Mungo's when he was only thirteen. The disease no longer has a huge impact on his life, and his moods are kept under control by a daily dose of a potion that contains lithium carbonate. However, from time to time, he still sinks into a depressive state, where he closes everyone off and rarely even shows up for class. They are rare and far between, but when they do happen, the usual charismatic Holden McDermott is out for the count. He tends to complete his homework weeks in advance, knowing that an episode could hit him out of the blue. This way, he can at least ensure that his grades won't suffer.
Holden was commissioned to paint the side of a small bookshop in Hogsmeade at age fourteen. After that, he became fairly well known as a painting protege among shopkeepers in the magical world. Recently completed pieces include the side of Weasley Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley and Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop in Hogsmeade. He is also well known as a budding political activist. When not studying or drawing, he can be found within student organizations that protest various controversial practices within the wizarding world. Of course not all their goals are so lofty. Holden openly admits to staging a sit in in support of vegetarian food items to be offered in the great hall.
In his sixth year, Holden became acquainted with the blonde-haired, blue-eyed wonder that is Cullyn Aynsworth. Though their romance was short lived, Holden fell desperately hard for Cullyn. When the boy disappeared from school, Holden was left an absolute wreck., His depression returned, and some days he didn't even make it out of bed to go to class. This depressive episode was the longest and most grueling Holden had yet to experience. It was a solid eight weeks before he finally felt okay.
Summer was a long, hard healing process for young McDermott. He buried himself in commissioned artwork and doing the summer assignments for school. He took to hanging out with his many friends on a regular basis, even paying Miss Ashlyn O'Neil a weekly visit at St. Mungo's to treat her to lunch. It was all he could do to keep his mind off of Cullyn. Distraction is his only means of not thinking of the boy who had so carelessly and thoroughly stolen his heart.
